A lot of what was learned was through other cultures in the Mediterranean area. These other civilizations were a good use for trade and other various resources with the Etruscan's.  When it comes to the art they produced, a lot of their ideas were formed through the Greeks, Egyptians, and Phoenicians. A lot of the Etruscan art was buried within the tombs of the dead because they believed in the afterlife. The Etruscan's believed after someone died they needed a proper burial with all the necessities to get them through the afterlife. They mostly consisted of sculptures, pottery, or various painting on the walls to commemorate the buried. The image above depicts an example of pottery that was made around the 6th century B.C. Pottery like this is mentioned as Amphora, "The amphora, with its lid, two-part handles, echnius foot, and rays at the base of the body as well as the black-figure technique, depends on Athenian prototypes of the mid-sixth century B.C.The placement of the panels, their subject matter, and the contrast between black and read in the use of color reflect an independent Etruscan spirit."(Met-museum) A vase like this was most likely used as some type of storage. The images on the vase consist of six birds, two dogs, and two mermen.

  1. I like how the Etruscans were inspired by other cultures to create their own works of art; and used their neighboring civilizations to their advantage. The vase reminds me of ancient Greek pottery, where they described stories of Greek hero's, and stories in general. The second photo, of the lid also has a cool, and simple design it reminds me of a spinning top, although I'm sure it was not used that way.

  3. In my blog post, I also talked about how Etruscan art was derived from the dead. I like how you mentioned that the Greeks, Etruscans, Phoenicians, and the Egyptians all shared art ideologies with one another because this is a huge factor for the creation of Etruscan art. I wonder what kind of storage items were put in the vase at the top?
